I started working in the nonprofit field more than 17 years back. Though I had a brief appointment in the for-profit world, nonprofit is all I’ve ever done. The disadvantages are, the financial incentives are inadequate and the work is demanding, but the outcome is extremely rewarding.

After about 15 years into my career, I began to detect an emergence of internal tension. I sensed the walls closing in. All of a sudden, well it wasn’t abrupt, my disappointment with being underpaid, overworked, and underutilized had been brewing in the back of my mind for a while. It was as if my internal convictions and external experiences were working together to create a perfect storm that would nudge me to the limit, forcing me to make a stand. The central moment was when surprisingly, I was fired from my job.

I was determined to see the termination as a good thing; that life was freeing me to pursue my dream of starting my own business. Having worked as a full-time proposal writer the earlier two years I recognized I could complete the same quantity of work in 1/3 the time and be compensated more. This was my beginning point. Aware that I didn’t know much about managing a business, having had numerous start ups fold in prior years, I made the decision to register for a few graduate MBA courses. The new business principles I learned flawlessly complemented my career background. I was making progress.

Today, I’m still in business. A little over 2 years has gone by. I still think myself a novice with so much more to learn. The point to the anecdote is that: 1) I love my work; 2) I’m paid what I’m worth; 3) I’m my own boss; and 4) I’m changing people’s lives. The million dollar question for you is: how do you channel the worth of your past experiences to begin earning a living, living your passion? I propose the answer is already inside you waiting to be discovered. There are a few easy steps you can take to start uncovering what you should be doing with your life.

Step 1: Consider your skills, strengths, limitations, and passions. What do you excel at? What fascinates you? What would you say are your proficiencies, for which you have documented work experience?

Step 2: Now that you’ve discovered your abilities and what makes you most happy, turn this into a consumable product. The goal here is to vend what you’re good at, at a price that is acceptable to you and your customers.

Step 3: Steps 1 & 2 are the groundwork of your business model. Next, you’ll want to make sure people want or need your product. Who else is offering it? What are their fees? Who are their customers? How will your good vary from theirs? What are the characteristics of your buyers?

Of course, the actual act of starting your own social-based enterprise is more difficult than the three steps suggested here. But, it’s a start. If you have a yearning to do more and be more, you owe it to yourself and the people who could benefit from your extraordinary skills to discover the gift you are to share with the world.
