Driving In Athens
I just visited the country which has the longest coastline in the World. Greece is surrounded by different seas from Ionian, Mediterranean to Aegean. No doubt it is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. The weather is beautiful, people are beautiful it is just amazing. Though there is one downfall which is the driving in the capital city. We hired three used cars for six days of our trip and after six days we felt like we were driving in Asia other than Europe.
The traffic is horrific. People are pushing for spaces on the road, some people drive through tram lines, which is terribly dangerous. The main downside are the road signs. Everything thing is in Greek especially if you are find your away round Athens it will take you whole day, you definitely need a navigation but then you have another problem navigation is in Greek too.
But driving outside Athens is just another beautiful experience. Our 3 hour driving trip to Delphi was absolutely beautiful. The road leads through the mountains. It is a very dangerous road that leads to Arachova and then Delphi but it is definitely a most beautiful drive. It reminded me of our driving experience in the Himalayas of Nepal. The best experience definitely driving in the island or Poros and Aegina. There are few temples and beautiful historical sculptures to see in this island so hiring a car is definitely a good thing.
Driving is certainly a nightmare in Athens but outside the city its a treat. You will just need time to get used to Athens traffic and road signals. It is definitely easier to hire a car in Greece other than public transport because they only run till 11 pm. If you hire a car you will be able to travel at late nights too and coastal line drive at night has an amazing view.
