Fighting Irish Hires Cincinnati Brian Kelly As New Head Football Coach
The Notre Dame football program has hired Cincinnati Bearcats football Coach Brian Kelly as new head coach. Kelly and his Bearcats went 12-0 in 2009 while winning their 2nd straight Big East title. The Bearcats have an upcoming bowl game against the Florida Gators; however, Kelly will not be able to coach the Bearcats in that final game due to obligations at Notre Dame that he will now be in charge of. Kelly has been known as a winning coach, someone with a great personality and who is most fit for the Notre Dame job.
Before coaching Cincinnati, Kelly coached for 3 seasons at Central Michigan, he had a combined 19-16 record in which they finished 9-4 and won their conference championship in his final season. Notre Dame had a disappointing 2009 season, they went 6-6 dropping their final 4 games, and then fired head coach Charlie Weis on November 30th. It is said that Kelly will be given ESPN’s Coach of the Year award during the 2009 ESPNU College Football Awards Ceremony tonight on ESPN. The news of Kelly leaving Cincinnati for Notre Dame took his players by surprise, some felt he let them down and were pretty disappointed in the news. “He went for the money, I’m fairly disgusted with the situation, that they let it last this long.” Gilyard said, after walking out upset at the coach’s decision.
Cincinnati Bearcat players weren’t expecting the news from Kelly, they all felt letdown after coming this far into the season, being 12-0 and playing in a BCS Bowl without your head coach is a big disappointment. The job at Notre Dame has been one coach Kelly has always admired, although, it certainly doesn’t feel like that same celebrated program it once was. So why not stay at Cincinnati and build a dynasty like it seemed he was on path to do? I guess for Kelly, Notre Dame’s prestige and great history was too good to pass up. In his 3 seasons at Cincinnati, Kelly guided them to a 34-6 record, his resume is all winning and you can expect the same success at Notre Dame in the near future. Along with winning the 2009 Home Depot Coach of the Year Award, Brian Kelly has won the Big East Coach of the Year award in three consecutive years (2007, 2008, 2009); he also coached a Div II team to two national championships when coaching at Grand Valley State.
Kelly will be without Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen and star wide out Golden Tate, as both have declared for the 2010 NFL Draft. Kelly wasted no time, arriving at South Bend on Friday, where he will be expected to bring back the success the Notre Dame program once possessed. Kelly’s hiring has been the hot latest sports news all over, while many people believe he will bring a winning attitude to this renowned football program.
