Common Poker Tell Myths
The first common poker tell myth we’ll be starting off with today is “a small bet means they have something and a big bet means they have nothing.” Being that every other poker book and video has drilled into everyone’s heads that we must raise with aces, kings, and ace king by a minimum of four times the big blind I believe it’s safe to assume that this myth is untrue, unless you’re dealing with a complete newbie who hasn’t even watched poker on TV. Players want chips, plain and simple. Perhaps if they’re bluffing they’ll bet strong but typically if a player who has a hand is betting strong it’s because they want to win a big pot. Nonetheless, a newbie may bet stronger when bluffing to try and take down the pot. The bet size is more telling depending on the type of player you’re up against. If it’s typically small bets and suddenly the guy comes in with a huge raise on the river, he is either A) trying to take down the pot after missing a draw or B) has a great hand and wants to be paid. Figure out which of these two categories he falls into and you have yourself the tell. Watch how he plays certain hands, figure out the types of hands he plays, and now you have him on a betting pattern, which is more reliable than a tell anyway.
The second myth to address today applies to internet poker only. Many players think if a player acts quickly he has something good and if he acts slow he doesn’t. This is not true in online play, especially against opponents playing on several tables. The slow act either means he’s A) focused on another table B) browsing the internet or checking e-mail or C) the internet connection is having difficulties. There’s even a D scenario in which someone at his house is now talking to him or his phone rang, doorbell, etc and he’s not watching his computer monitor at the moment. Simply because a player isn’t acting quickly it doesn’t mean he has a strong or weak hand. If he acts quick he wants to play the hand and is paying attention to that particular table at the moment. He could have anything from 32 off to King Queen suited. Due to the availability of buttons to check, a player can use these simply to tell the computer what he intends to do during the hand so he can play multiple tables at once.
The following is a real tell to watch for during a live game. Pay attention to when your opponent protects their cards. Some players only cover their cards when they intend to play a hand. If the cards aren’t covered they’re going into the muck. It’s an interesting tell to keep an eye out for as you may be able to steal blinds from opponents based on whether or not they’re cards are covered. If they are and your opponent only covers when he plans to play, don’t try for the steal. If they aren’t you have yourself a green light to bump up the pot and take some blinds. Some players may even cover their cards with different colored chips depending on the strength of their hand. Keep an eye out for this and try to pick up on what color represents what.
